3 Unique Tips for Hiking in Hawaii

Hawaii is like the land of milk and honey when it comes to hiking and seeing the great outdoors. There are hundreds of state sanctioned and maintained hiking trails scattered around the Hawaiian Islands. There are probably closer to thousands of Hawaii hiking trails when you factor in those trails that are ancient and not even discovered yet.

Unique Tips for Hiking in Hawaii

Hawaii really is like "hiking heaven". You can hike in locations of lava or just go on an easy, scenic stroll to some great views. Discover historic sites and maybe even see some wild pig, rare birds and gorgeous Hawaiian flora.
Whether you're a seasoned hiker or a newbie just looking to delve into the adventurous side of hiking for the first time, there are some things that you need to know first about Hiking in Hawaii

Where is the Best Hiking in Hawaii?

Well, for starters, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island of Hawaii has over 150 miles of hiking trails alone.
The Waipio Valley also has some awesome and scenic hiking trails.
Don't worry though, if you're spending some time in Waikiki, then Oahu has great hiking trails to waterfalls, ruins and scenic lookouts.

3 Tips to Hiking in Hawaii:

Wear the Correct Clothing

Yes, it's Hawaii. It's warm and humid and especially sunny on those trails that have no cover. However, wearing a hat and something to cover exposed skin will save you some sunburn and bug bites. Also, make sure you wear the correct hiking shoes, or at least, athletic shoes. If you wear sandals, slippers or flip-flops then you're just asking to slip and fall.

Pay Attention to Warning Signs and Cautions

Some novice hiking trails will end in Hawaii and then you'll find the start of more difficult ones that are not for beginners. For instance, Wa'ahila Ridge Trail in Oahu is a pretty easy-to-moderate hike. It does end, though, with a nice big sign that says "END OF MAINTAINED TRAIL". You can continue from this point but it isn't recommended.

First Aid Kit, Cell Phone and a Buddy

Never hike alone. I can't stress that enough. Even a twisted ankle can have you stranded somewhere and you'll want a buddy along with if that happens. This also includes the reasons to bring a cell phone and first aid kit. The first aid kit can come in handy in a myriad of situations. The cell phone (you'll usually have coverage) is along just in case and to take pictures of Hawaiian hiking adventures!
